Gold Medalist Swimmers recovers
Adrian Turner – Swimmer
-
Winter National Champs 1999- Early start to get on the road. I drove for six hours.
- Feeling like I flu. (Tired, slightly nautious). Sleep in the afternoon then don’t get up. That night am sick and dizzy. Faint in bathroom and whack back of head on toilet seat(!)
- Girlfriend calls GP a.m. Gives anti-sickness injection Lasts for about six hours in which I sleep, then wake and vomit again. GP called back and I have deteriorated again with very high temperature. Also urinating blood and delirious (thinking “That’ a pretty colour” but didn’t find it scary or tell GP!) Ambulance is called, sent to Oban Hospital. No food on this day and until Monday 27th Dec.
- Deteriorating further. Basically semi-conscious. Sent to 2nd hospital, Vale of Leaven. Three days at this hospital were apparently the worst. I have fever, malaise, anaemia and acute intravascular haemolysis. Some of the tests suggest paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria. Given red-cell Transfusions, antibiotics (Penicillin and Clarithomycin),Intravenous methylprednisolone, intravenous immunoglobin and corticosteroids (oral prednisolone). Girlfriend and sister sleeping on a plastic chair next to me! Parents and other sister told to come.
- Sent to 3rd hospital, Glasgow. Still urinating blood, urinary catheter fitted (no fun at all). Haemoglobin level down to 5.0 (My normal level is 15.2). Parents and other sister arrive.
- Slight but steady improvements.
- Faint in shower (too hot and dizzy).
- Still needing wheelchair to get around.
- Happy New Year!?
- Stomach pains, particularly after eating.
- Stomach pains, unbearable. They cause me to vomit after eating.
- Stomach pains. Starting to walk along corridor.
- Allowed home. Stomach pains and vomiting on journey.
Stomach pains gone.
That year (2001) Adrian took two gold medals at the Scottish Championships and is in the international squad.
